The National Environmental Policy Act: 1969

In 1969, Congress passed the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to conserve and protect the Nation’s natural resources for the benefit of future generations.

NEPA requires that agencies fully consider the environmental costs and benefits of proposed actions receiving Federal funding before deciding to undertake those actions.

  • Requires agencies to assess the impacts of their actions before taking action
  • Requires consideration of alternatives
  • Requires public disclosure and involvement
