Wetlands Classification System: Lacustrine Wetlands

Lacustrine wetlands generally have the following characteristics:

  • Situated in a topographic depression (like a lake) or a dammed river channel
  • Lack trees, shrubs, mosses, or lichens – plants tend to be floating or submerged
  • Include waters that may be tidal or non-tidal, but ocean-derived salinity is always less than 0.5 ppt
