Working With Tribes To Join the NFIP

Insuring Tribal Buildings

Tribes benefit by buying all available types of insurance coverage for the repair and replacement of buildings as well as contents. Insurance provides far more compensation for damages than disaster relief funding.

NFIP and Economic Development

Venture capital groups may be interested in developing projects such as mini-malls, casinos, hospitals, marinas, and golf courses on reservations, and need to know if proposed development is in a floodplain. Also, if land is earmarked for recreational development, floodplain ordinances can be used to prevent building residential structures.

Control Over Water Flows

With a floodplain ordinance in place, local, State, and Federal construction projects on or near a reservation require permits from the tribe, and cannot alter water flow on tribal lands.
