Step 2: Finding the General Location of the Property

Using the Panel number determined from the Index, you obtained Panel 0004 that shows the property. Because the individual Panel shows more physical landmarks than the Index, you can find the general location by referring to features such as major roads or city limits.

Generally, FEMA labels only major roads and the roads in or near floodprone areas on a flood map. To find the general location of the property, you may need to refer to another type of map that shows additional roads and physical features. You might try a city map, highway department map, or a tax assessor’s map.

Many search engines host online maps such as Google Maps, available at https://www.google.com/maps or Bing Maps, available at https://www.bing.com/maps.

With the advent of widely available digital data, some State, County and local governments also host online maps that include the National Flood Hazard Layer (NHFL). These online maps may be searchable by address or tax map and parcel number allowing you to more easily find the specific location of your property in relation to identified flood hazards.
