Lesson 2: National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

NEPA provides the basis for the establishment of a national environmental strategy.

The primary goals of NEPA are to:

  • Obligate Federal agencies to consider the potential impacts of their actions (physical, natural, cultural, and social) to the human environment
  • Require consideration of alternatives to the proposed action
  • Ensure that the agency will provide an opportunity for public input into the decision-making process
  • Obligate Federal agencies to consider the potential impacts of their actions (physical, natural, cultural, and social) to the human environment
