Location of Hazardous Materials/Chemicals Storage Areas

When granted permission to tour the site, ask to view the location where hazardous materials/chemicals are being stored. Look at chemical labels and conditions of the hazardous materials/chemicals containers. Labels should be visible as you approach the container, thus allowing the individuals to know what products are being stored in the containers. If you spot a waste storage area like the one shown in Figure 5-3, report it to your local fire department and the Environmental Protection Agency immediately.

Look for signs of liquid pools or puddles in the storage areas. This might indicate poor drainage or possibly chemicals have been spilled or are leaking from the storage containers. These pools and puddles of liquids give off vapors, which could cause injury to those breathing them or to the skin if workers come in contact with these materials. Sites like the one shown in Figure 5-3 are against the law and in serious violation of local, State, and Federal regulations.

They could possibly be abandoned waste sites from a previous owner. Not only are sites such as these an eye sore, the containers may be leaking extremely toxic liquids and vapors into the environment.

Businesses that follow sound safety rules and conduct regular inspections of their storage areas know if there are dangers from possible chemical exposure during your visit. Companies attempting to hide or conceal chemical information from the public will not be so accommodating.
