A disaster has occurred and the President has declared the event a Federal disaster. So what happens next? The next step is for you to begin helping residents in the disaster stricken area obtain disaster assistance, including Individual Assistance (IA).

This lesson introduces several IA concepts that you must know as an IA employee. It is important for you to understand the available IA programs so you will know where to refer applicants who need assistance. In addition, you must be familiar with the Sequence of Delivery because it represents the flow of assistance to disaster victims. You will need to explain this process when helping applicants.

Upon completion of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Identify the different types of Individual Assistance (IA) programs.
  • Define the Sequence of Delivery and explain its purpose.
  • List the order and components of the Sequence of Delivery.
